This Article is about how ever since what happened with the virginia shooting on April 16, 2006. Video games have gone through many criticism, there will probably be new bills coming out to regulate video games because of the recent shooting. But what about our video game rights? Most people who play video games don't cause any violence at all. The Video Game Voters Network is fighting for video games rights. They send letters to the government saying how they should not regulate games and how it infringe our first admendment.Do you think the government has the right to tell us what games we can play and what we can't?

Some Tips for parents who want to control what kinds of games are appropriate for their family plays:

1) Look at the ratings on the front and the content descriptors on the back of the game package.
2) Look carefully at the game package, Game content is described in the back of every game
3) Talk to other parents and children to see what kinds of games they are playing.
4) Know that some games are played on the internet, so be acknowledge that there would be live chat, character models, and settings.
5) Play the games that you buy with them together, so you can see if it really is appropriate.
6) Lastly read more about the ratings system and never changes that may occur.

Business, Government use games to teach?

Video games are fun to play and very engaging. So what happens when you make a video game about learning. They can still be fun and you won't realize that you are actually learning because your having fun. Business are now interested in developing training games for their employees to play so they can learn the material better because they will be more engaged. Because of video games, any scenario is possible and can be used to make the learning process easier. The army can use these games to train for real life events, that may happen. If it was me to learn from a book or
a video game, i would choose video game. wouldn't you?

The U.S. Army has sunk $16 million into a government-sponsored video game that blurs the line between fantasy and the reality of war.This game called America's Army already has more than 4.6 million people playing and 100,000 new players each month. The government is deceptive in trying to influence youngsters to join the army. This game, only shows all the good stuff in war, and doesn't show how thousands of soldiers are left without hands, legs, and some with scars. I've heard about this game but never thought that this was a way that the u.s army wanted to recruit people like this. I know a few friends who played this game and they say its awesome. Hopefully they know better than to join the army and know that its only a game and not reality.

Australia bans graffiti game

The Australian Government Classification Review Board’s chose to ban Marc Ecko's new game Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure. This game is available everywhere else, so then why would the Australian Government ban the game? They believe that this game would promote Graffiti and increase crime rates. New York City also tried to ban the game because Mayor Bloomberg claimed that it would increase vandalism but due to the fact that it violated the first amendment, the ban could not be enforced. You can see here how video games affect government because of its influence on kids. When kids see the game, they think its ok to do whatever happens in the game and thats when everything goes bad.

ESRB Ratings: Parental Awareness & Use

This chart shows the amount of ratings awareness and ratings use for parents of children ages 3-17 in 1999-2006. In 1999 49% of parents were aware of the content of the games their children were playing. But only 43 percent were actually using the rating system. In 2002, the number of parents aware were 67% but only 53% were actually using it. In 2006, 83 % of parents were aware but only 74 percent were actually using it. As you can see the awareness of parents who know the video rating system has increase about 25%. And the amount of people who are actually using it also increase dramatically. This shows that parents can now buy games for their children without having to worry if its going to be too violent or a game that is not suitable for them. Wow! what a relieve for parents.

Why video games ratings are needed?

As most of you may know, Grand Theft Auto is one of the most popular games in the Country. It is a game that is very violent and has strong language and also maybe some brief nudity. That is why, this game got the rating of "M" which stands for mature. This means that only people 17 and older are allow to purchase the game and also play it. It is not suitable for children because of the intense violence and the strong language. As you can see the rating system does work in helping parents choose the right game for there children. They would most certainly not buy a rated "M" game for their 12 year old son or daughter, unless they want them to turn out bad and learn some "new words" while playing these rated "M" games. If you do not want your 12 year old daughter and son, becoming your worst nightmares, then you have to stick to these ratings system because they do work.

Truth in Video Game Rating Act

The Truth in Video Game Rating Act would force the Federal Trade Commission to create rules governing the rating of games. That means it would force the ESRB to review the game entirely before distributing a rating for it. This new bill would also help stop mistakes of a wrong rating for a certain game. Hopefully with this new bill, parents will be buying appropriate games for their children.

The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) ratings provides accurate information about the content of video games. These ratings is composed of two parts: Rating symbols and Content desciptors. Rating symbols suggests the age group appropriate to play the game and the content desciptors indicates that there are some games in the game that made it a certain rating. These ratings are usually found on the lower left hand corner or the lower right hand of the video game box.
